In response to escalating traffic challenges, the city government of San Fernando, Pampanga, has embarked on an ambitious mass transit project. On November 28, 2023, Mayor Vilma Balle-Caluag signed a memorandum of understanding with Futran Philippines, Inc. to conduct a feasibility study for the “People Mover Project.” This initiative aims to introduce a suspended podcar rail system powered by sustainable and renewable energy sources, including solar panels.
The feasibility study, expected to span six to twelve months, will assess the technical and financial viability of the proposed transit system. Mayor Balle-Caluag emphasized that this project seeks to provide a long-term solution to the city’s worsening traffic situation, which has been exacerbated by a growing workforce, increased commercial activities, and a surge in tourism.
In the interim, the city government has implemented measures such as modifying truck restrictions and adjusting work and school schedules to mitigate congestion. The introduction of a mass transit system is anticipated to significantly enhance mobility, reduce travel times, and improve the overall quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
As San Fernando positions itself as a progressive urban center, the successful implementation of the People Mover Project could serve as a model for other cities grappling with similar transportation challenges. The collaboration with Futran Philippines, Inc. reflects the city’s commitment to innovative and sustainable urban development solutions.
