The City of San Fernando, renowned as the “Christmas Capital of the Philippines,” once again captivated audiences with its annual Giant Lantern Festival held on December 14, 2024. This year’s festival showcased a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, as participants were required to incorporate at least 30% LED materials into their lantern designs. This initiative aimed to promote sustainability while preserving the rich cultural heritage of the event.
Barangay San Nicolas emerged as the champion, marking a triumphant return after a 24-year hiatus from the top spot. Their lantern, a mesmerizing fusion of intricate craftsmanship and cutting-edge LED technology, left spectators in awe. Barangay Sto. Niño secured the first runner-up position, achieving their first podium finish in 52 years, a testament to their dedication and evolving artistry.
The festival’s emphasis on sustainability was further highlighted by the city’s unveiling of its first all-LED rotor-operated giant lantern, in collaboration with Firefly Electric and Lighting Corporation. This move not only reduces energy consumption but also sets a precedent for future participants to adopt eco-friendly practices. The success of the 2024 Giant Lantern Festival underscores San Fernando’s commitment to cultural preservation and environmental responsibility.
As the festival concluded, plans were already underway for the 2025 edition, with organizers aiming to introduce more innovative elements while staying true to the event’s storied traditions. The Giant Lantern Festival continues to be a beacon of Filipino creativity, resilience, and unity during the holiday season.
